Rivers of India
Ciachin glacier: Ciachin glacier is the largest glacier in the world. The Indian rivers are categorized into two groups on the basis of their regions of origin.
- Himalayan Rivers: These are perennial rivers because they originate due to the melting of glaciers of the Himalayan regions.
- Peninsula Rivers: These are ephemeral or seasonable rivers because they flow in the form of rivers only in the rainy season.
The three major river systems are defined in the Himalayan Rivers:-
- The Indus River System: Comprises of river Indus and its tributaries
- The Indus: This river originates from a glacier near Bokharchur in the Tibetan region situated in the Kailash mountain range in Tibet it is known as “Single Khammam”. After following in the northwest direction this river enters India and flows between the Zaskar and Ladakh ranges. River Indus flows only through the Leh district of Jammu and Kashmir in India following towards west it enters into Pakistan near “Chillar” and then moves in South direction. In Pakistan this river receives Punjab (a group of 5 rivers) a little above Mithankot, finally, it drains into the Arabian sea east of Karachi. In India the total length of the Indus river 1114 km, while its whole length is about 2880 km.
Punjab – (Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Beas, Satluj)
*Beas completely lies in Indus.
- The fiver major tributaries of Indus:- “Punjab”
- The Jhelum River: This River arises from a spring Verinab in the Peer Punjab range. This flows through Srinagar and the Wular lake (largest freshwater lake of India). River Jhelum enters Pakistan and joins the Chenab near Jhang.
- The Chenab River: It is the largest tributary of the Indus river. This comprises two streams namely “Chandra and the Bhaga”. Both the streams meet each other at “Tandi” near key long in Himachal Pradesh. Here After it is called “Chenab or the Chandra Bhaga” river. River Chenab meets river Indus a few kilometers above Mithanpur.
- The Ravi River: Ravi originates from the west of the Rohtang Pas in the Kullu hills of Himachal Pradesh. This river flows through the Chamba Valley. This river joins river Chenab near Sarai Sindhu.
- The Beas River: This river originates from the Vyaskund near the Rohtang Pas. This river flows through the Kullu valley. It enters the Punjab planes where it meets the Satluj river near Harike. This the only tributary of the Indus which completely lies in India (among Punjab).
- The Satluj River: River Satluj originates from Rakas lake near Mansarover in Tibet. In Tibet, it is known as “Langchen Khambab” This river passes through the Ship Kila. It enters Punjab planes at Ropar, then it enters Pakistan where it meets the Indus about 1 km above Mithankot.
“The Bhakra Nangal Dam” has been constructed on this river.
